Overview
Monterrey is northern Mexico's business powerhouse, a confident, modern city with a dramatic setting. The saddle-shaped Cerro de la Silla and the jagged peaks of the Sierra Madre rise straight out of the suburbs.
It is not a classic colonial town, but its old steelworks have become a huge park, its museums are excellent, and real wilderness starts within an hour's drive. Come for the canyons and caves, then eat roast cabrito in the evening.

Getting around
The Metrorrey lines are useful for the centre and Parque Fundidora, but distances are large and most people use ride-hailing apps or taxis.
The airport is north-east of the city in Apodaca; a taxi or ride-hail car to the centre takes about 30 to 40 minutes.
When to go
October to April is the most comfortable time, with mild, sunny days. Summers are fiercely hot, and the occasional hurricane remnant can bring heavy rain in late summer.
