Overview
San Miguel is the commercial centre of eastern El Salvador, a hot, energetic city at the foot of the Chaparrastique volcano. It sees few foreign visitors and is known mainly for its huge November carnival.
Use it as a base for a quieter side of the country: black-sand beaches, mangroves, lagoons and islands in the Gulf of Fonseca are all within a couple of hours.

San Miguel is around three hours' drive east of San Salvador's airport, and buses link it with the capital.
When to go
November to April is dry and sunny, with the carnival in late November. It's hot all year, and the wet season from May to October brings afternoon storms.
