Overview

Bălți is Moldova's second city and the main town of the north, a practical place of Soviet-era apartment blocks, markets and a handful of handsome older buildings. It sees very few tourists.

Honestly, it works best as a base rather than a destination. From here you can reach the riverside fortress at Soroca, cliffside monasteries along the Dniester and rolling farmland that rarely appears in guidebooks.

The city's theatre puts on plays in Romanian; worth checking the programme if you are staying a few nights.

Head east to the river cliffs at Saharna or Țipova, where monasteries and hermit cells are cut into the rock.

Where to stay

Getting around

The centre is walkable, and trolleybuses and minibuses cover the rest of the city. Taxis are cheap and easy to find.

Buses and minibuses run frequently from Chișinău and take around two and a half hours; there are also slower trains.

When to go

May to September is warm and green, ideal for day trips into the countryside. Winters are cold, with snow likely, and many rural sights are harder to reach.
