Overview
Tiraspol is the main city of Transnistria, a breakaway strip of land along the Dniester that is internationally recognised as part of Moldova but runs its own affairs. Lenin still stands outside the government building and hammer-and-sickle symbols appear on the flag.
The streets are clean, wide and quiet. The region has its own currency and foreign bank cards are often not accepted, so bring cash. Check the latest UK government travel advice before planning a visit.

Getting around
The centre is easy on foot, and trolleybuses and minibuses link Tiraspol with Bender.
Minibuses from Chișinău's central bus station take around one and a half to two hours, including the checkpoint where you register on entry.
When to go
Late spring and summer are warm and green, and the riverside is at its best. Winters are cold and grey, with little going on.
