Overview
Mdina was Malta's capital until the Knights moved their seat to the harbour, and it has barely changed since. Behind its walls, narrow lanes of palaces and churches stay remarkably quiet, which is why it is known as the Silent City.
It sits on a ridge in the middle of the island, with views across fields to the sea. Pair it with the neighbouring town of Rabat, which has catacombs, Roman remains and everyday local life.
