What it is
Around half of the world's mountain gorillas live in the Virunga volcanoes and Bwindi.
How to do it
Buy a gorilla-trekking permit from the Rwanda Development Board or Uganda Wildlife Authority, then trek with rangers to spend an hour with a habituated family.
Top tip
Permits are limited and expensive, so book months ahead.
My experience
Gorillas are ground-dwelling, predominantly herbivorous apes that inhabit the forests of central Sub-Saharan Africa. They are divided into two species: the Eastern Gorillas and the Western Gorillas (both critically endangered), and either four or five subspecies.
They are the largest living primates The DNA of gorillas is highly incredibly similar to Human DNA – 95–99% depending on what is counted, and they are the next closest living relatives to the human.
