Overview

Freeport is the main town of Grand Bahama, a planned city founded in the 1950s as a free-trade zone. It is spread out and low-key, with a quieter, more relaxed feel than Nassau.

Most visitors base themselves in neighbouring Lucaya, by the beaches and marina. Beyond town, the island's national parks, caves and empty stretches of sand are the real reasons to come.

Getting around

Public transport is limited, so rent a car or use taxis. Traffic drives on the left, and a car makes it easy to reach the beaches of the east end.

The airport is around 10 minutes by taxi from Freeport and 20 minutes from Lucaya.

When to go

December to April is dry and pleasantly warm. Summers are hot and humid, and hurricane season runs from June to November.
