Overview
Bitola was once an important Ottoman city, known as the city of consuls for the many foreign missions based here. That era left a long, elegant main street of pastel nineteenth-century mansions, now lined with cafés.
It is a pleasant, unhurried place for a day or two, with a mix of Ottoman mosques and Orthodox churches, the ruins of an ancient city on the edge of town and the forested slopes of Mount Pelister rising above it.
