Overview
Tampere sits on a narrow ridge between two large lakes, with rapids rushing through the middle of town. The water powered its red-brick textile mills, which earned it the nickname "Manchester of Finland" and now house museums, cafés and studios.
Today it is a relaxed, friendly city with a big student population and a proud claim to be the sauna capital of the world. Add a ridge-top tower, a Moomin museum and black sausage at the market, and it is an easy place to like.
