Overview
Helsinki is a calm, low-rise capital spread across peninsulas and islands on the Gulf of Finland. Neoclassical squares, Art Nouveau streets and bold modern architecture sit side by side, and the sea is never far away.
Its pleasures are understated: a swim and sauna by the water, a ferry to an island fortress, a cinnamon bun in a design-filled café. Summer nights barely get dark, while winter brings snow, candlelight and the best excuse for a sauna.
