Overview
Brest sits on the Bug river, right on the border with Poland, and has long been a crossing point between east and west. Most of the city is green and low-rise, with leafy streets and a pleasant pedestrian centre.
Its defining sight is the fortress, where a Soviet garrison held out for weeks after the German invasion of 1941. For a future visit, it pairs well with a trip into Białowieża Forest, one of Europe's last primeval woodlands.
