Overview

Sikasso is the main town of Mali's far south, the greenest and most fertile part of the country, close to the borders with Burkina Faso and Côte d'Ivoire. Fruit, vegetables and cotton from the surrounding farmland fill its markets.

In the nineteenth century it was the capital of the Kénédougou kingdom, protected by great earthen walls known as a tata. Little of them survives, but the town's history gives a visit some depth.
