Overview

Mbabane is the administrative capital of Eswatini, a small, hilly city of government offices and shopping centres in the highveld. It is not a sightseeing destination in itself, but it makes a practical base for some of the country's best outdoor experiences.

Within easy reach are a vast granite dome, a mountain reserve with a forest canopy tour, and a glass factory that turns recycled bottles into art. The Ezulwini Valley is just down the hill.

Where to stay

Getting around

A car is the easiest way to explore; taxis are available in town and minibuses link Mbabane with Manzini and the valley.

The international airport is around an hour and a half's drive east. The Ngwenya border post with South Africa is close to the city.

When to go

May to September is dry and sunny, though nights in the hills can be cold. Summer brings green hills, warm days and afternoon thunderstorms, and mist is common at this altitude.
