Overview
Tadjoura is one of the oldest towns on the Horn of Africa coast, a quiet place of whitewashed houses and mosques on the northern shore of the gulf, backed by bare mountains.
There is little to do in town itself, which is part of its charm. It's a peaceful base for snorkelling and diving, hiking in the green Goda Mountains and visiting Lake Assal.

Getting around
The town is small and walkable; you need a four-wheel drive and a guide for the mountains and lakes.
Tadjoura is a long drive around the gulf from Djibouti City, or a quicker boat crossing when services run.
When to go
November to February is the coolest and most pleasant time. Summer heat is intense and best avoided.
