Overview
Djibouti City is a port capital on the Gulf of Tadjoura, at the meeting point of Africa and Arabia. Its French colonial quarter, busy Somali and Afar markets and foreign naval bases give it an unusual mix.
Most visitors come for what lies beyond the city: some of the most otherworldly landscapes on earth, from salt lakes far below sea level to fields of limestone chimneys, and whale sharks in the gulf in winter.

Getting around
Taxis are the easiest way around town. Trips to the lakes need a four-wheel drive and a guide.
The airport is a few kilometres south of the centre, around 15 minutes by taxi.
When to go
November to February is the coolest and most comfortable time, and the best for whale sharks. Summer is extremely hot, often above 40°C.
