Overview

Moundou is Chad's second city, an industrial and market town on the banks of the Logone river in the green, fertile south. It is known for its brewery, its cotton trade and a busier, more humid feel than the desert north.

Chad has faced long periods of insecurity, so this guide is written for a future, safer time. Moundou has few formal sights, but the river, the markets and the everyday rhythm of southern Chad are its real interest.

Where to stay

Getting around

Moto-taxis are the usual way to get around town. A local driver is advisable for trips further out.

Moundou is a long road journey south from N'Djamena, typically most of a day.

When to go

The dry season from November to February is the most comfortable time. March to May is very hot, and the south's long rainy season runs from around May to October.
