Overview

Abéché was once the capital of the powerful Wadai sultanate, a centre of trans-Saharan trade linking Lake Chad to the Nile. Today it is the main town of eastern Chad, a dusty place of mud-brick walls, mosques and markets on the edge of the Sahel.

The region near the Sudanese border has faced serious insecurity, and this guide is written for a future, safer time. Then, Abéché's history and its role as a gateway to the north-east would make it a fascinating stop.

Where to stay

Getting around

The town is small and best explored with a trusted local driver and guide.

Abéché lies far east of N'Djamena, a very long road journey across the Sahel.

When to go

November to February brings the coolest, driest weather. From March to June the heat is fierce, and the short rains fall from July to September.
