Overview

Berbérati is one of the largest towns in the Central African Republic, set among rolling hills and forest in the south-west, close to the border with Cameroon. It has long been a centre for the diamond and coffee trades, and its market draws traders from across the region.

The country has faced long periods of instability, so this guide is written for a future time when travel is safer. Then, Berbérati could serve as a stepping stone towards the rainforests of Dzanga-Sangha.

Where to stay

Getting around

Taxis and moto-taxis cover the town. A local driver is essential for travel beyond it.

Berbérati is a very long road journey west of Bangui, often on difficult roads.

When to go

The dry months from December to February are best. The long rainy season can cut road links for weeks.
