Overview

Nuku'alofa is the small, low-rise capital of the Kingdom of Tonga, the only Pacific nation never colonised. It sits on the north coast of Tongatapu, the main island, facing a lagoon scattered with tiny islets.

Life is slow and devout. On Sundays almost everything closes and the churches fill with extraordinary choral singing. The island beyond has blowholes, ancient royal tombs and a great stone gateway.

Where to stay

Getting around

Taxis and hire cars are the easiest way to explore Tongatapu; buses are infrequent. Remember almost nothing runs on Sundays.

The airport is on the other side of the island, around 30 minutes by road from town.

When to go

The cooler, drier months from May to October are the most comfortable, and whale season runs from July to October. November to April is hotter and wetter, with a risk of cyclones.
