Overview
Auckland is New Zealand's largest city, spread across a narrow isthmus between two harbours and dotted with dozens of extinct volcanic cones. Water is never far away, and boats fill the marinas.
It is a relaxed, diverse city with a large Pacific Islander and Asian population, reflected in its food. Use it as more than an arrival point: ferries reach wine-growing islands and black-sand surf beaches are under an hour's drive.
