Overview
Castries wraps around a deep natural harbour on Saint Lucia's north-west coast, backed by steep green hills. Repeated fires destroyed much of the old wooden town, so it is mostly modern and workaday, but its market, cathedral and waterfront have plenty of local life.
Most visitors stay at the beaches to the north and come in on market day or a cruise stop. From here, the island's rainforest, volcanic springs and the twin Pitons are all within a day's reach.

Getting around
Minibuses run along the main roads from the centre, and taxis are plentiful. Roads are winding and steep, so driving takes longer than distances suggest. Drive on the left.
Hewanorra International, at the island's southern tip, is about an hour and a half by road; the small George F. L. Charles airport on the edge of Castries handles regional flights.
When to go
December to April is the dry season and the peak time to visit. The hurricane season runs from June to November. Carnival takes place in July.
