Overview
Nicaragua's capital sprawls along the southern shore of Lake Managua, ringed by volcanic crater lagoons. The 1972 earthquake destroyed much of the old centre, so the city has no single historic core; instead it spreads out in low-rise neighbourhoods linked by long avenues.
Most travellers pass through on their way to Granada or León, but a day or two here reveals the country's political history, a few striking ruins and easy trips to volcanoes and crater lakes.

Getting around
Managua is spread out and not made for walking. Use taxis booked through your hotel or a trusted company, and agree the fare before you set off.
The airport is about 11 km east of the centre, roughly 20 to 30 minutes by taxi depending on traffic.
When to go
The dry season (December to April) brings sunshine and dusty heat. The rainy season (May to November) means afternoon downpours but greener countryside and fewer visitors.
