Overview

León is Nicaragua's intellectual and political heartland, a hot, lively university city of whitewashed churches, revolutionary murals and busy plazas. It was the capital for centuries and still feels proudly independent of Managua.

The streets are full of students, and the city makes a great base for climbing the volcanoes of the Maribios range or escaping to the Pacific beaches just half an hour away.

Things to see

  • León Cathedral

Central America's largest cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; walk barefoot across its brilliant white roof for views of the volcanoes.

Things to do

Where to stay

  • Centro

Around the cathedral and Parque Central, walkable to everything and full of hostels and guesthouses.

  • Sutiaba

The old indigenous quarter to the west, quieter and more local.

  • Las Peñitas

Beach guesthouses for those who prefer the sea breeze to city heat.

Getting around

The centre is easy to walk, though the heat slows you down. Taxis are cheap and buses run to the beaches.

Shuttles and buses from Managua airport take around two hours.

When to go

The dry months from November to February are the most comfortable; March and April are fiercely hot. Semana Santa (Easter week) brings processions and crowds to the beaches.
