Overview
Belize City is the country's largest town and its main transport hub, a low-rise port of wooden houses and canals where the Haulover Creek meets the Caribbean.
Most visitors pass straight through on their way to the cayes, the reef or the jungle, but it is worth a day. The old colonial district around Fort George is pleasant to walk, the people are friendly, and the mix of Creole, Mestizo, Garifuna and Maya cultures is part of what makes Belize distinctive.

Getting around
The old centre is small and walkable by day, but take taxis after dark and stay in the main districts, as some neighbourhoods have a reputation for crime.
The international airport is about 20 minutes from the centre by taxi; small planes from the municipal airstrip serve the cayes and the south.
When to go
December to April is dry, sunny and breezy. June to November brings heavier rain and the hurricane season, with the highest risk from August to October.
