Overview
Dushanbe grew from a Monday market village into a Soviet capital, and today it is a city of tree-lined avenues, grand new monuments and fountains, with the snowy Fann and Hissar mountains close at hand.
It is a relaxed, green place to arrange permits and supplies before heading into the Pamirs, but it deserves a few days of its own for museums, plov in a teahouse and a wander through the bazaar.

Getting around
Taxis are cheap and plentiful; ride-hailing apps work well. Shared minibuses run along main roads, and the centre is pleasant to walk.
The airport is on the southern edge of the city, about 15 minutes from the centre by taxi.
When to go
Spring brings blossom and mild weather, and autumn is golden and clear. Summers are very hot, though that is the season for the high mountains; winters are cold.
