Overview

Bokhtar, known until 2018 as Kurgan-Tyube, is the administrative centre of Khatlon, a warm, flat region of cotton fields and orchards in the south of Tajikistan.

It is a working town rather than a destination, but it sits near some remarkable places: a ruined Buddhist monastery, a riverside nature reserve on the Afghan border and the vast reservoir behind one of the world's tallest dams.

    Ajina Tepe

The low earth mounds of a seventh-century Buddhist monastery, where the great reclining Buddha now in Dushanbe was found.

  • Central bazaar

A busy local market for melons, pomegranates, bread and household goods, at its best in the morning.

  • Regional history museum

A modest museum with archaeological finds from the region's Buddhist and Kushan past.

Getting around

Taxis are cheap and easy to flag down. A hired car with a driver is the best way to reach the reserve and the dam.

Shared taxis and minibuses run south from Dushanbe in about two hours.

When to go

Spring and autumn are warm and pleasant. Summers in Khatlon are among the hottest in Central Asia, so avoid July and August if you can.
