Overview

Karakol is a quiet town of low wooden houses and tree-lined streets near the eastern end of Lake Issyk-Kul, with the peaks of the Teskey Ala-Too rising behind it. Founded as a Russian frontier post, it has Kyrgyz, Russian and Dungan communities.

It is Kyrgyzstan's main trekking base, with alpine lakes, hot springs and red rock valleys within easy reach. In winter, a ski resort opens in the mountains above town.
