Overview
Bishkek is a green, low-rise Soviet-planned capital laid out on a grid, with the snowy Kyrgyz Ala-Too range rising just south of town. It is not a city of grand sights, but it is relaxed, friendly and full of parks.
Most travellers use it as a base to arrange treks, horse rides and trips around Kyrgyzstan. Stay a couple of days to enjoy the cafés, bazaars and the mountains on its doorstep.

Manas airport is about 30 to 40 minutes from the centre by taxi.
When to go
Late spring to early autumn is best, with warm days and open mountain trails. Summers can be hot in the city, and winters are cold and sometimes smoggy.
