Overview
Tbilisi spreads along the Mtkvari river in a deep valley, overlooked by a ruined fortress and hills dotted with churches. Its old town is a jumble of wooden balconies, domed sulphur baths and winding lanes, next to bold modern bridges and glass.
Georgians are famously hospitable, and the food and wine are reason enough to visit: cheese-filled khachapuri, soup dumplings and amber wine made in clay jars. It is an easy, affordable city to spend several days in.

Getting around
The metro is cheap and fast, and buses and ride-hailing apps cover the rest. The old town is best on foot.
Taxis from the airport take around 25 minutes to the centre, and a bus runs to the city too.
When to go
Spring and autumn are warm and pleasant, and October brings the grape harvest and Tbilisoba city festival. Summers are hot, and winters are cold but usually mild.
