Overview

Muharraq was Bahrain's capital until 1923 and the centre of its pearling trade. Its old quarter of coral-stone houses, wind towers and narrow lanes has been carefully restored, and it feels a world away from the towers of Manama across the water.

It is the best place in Bahrain to get a sense of life before oil. Walk the lanes in the late afternoon, then stop for tea and sweet halwa.

Where to stay

Getting around

The old town is best on foot. Use taxis or ride-hailing apps for anything further.

The airport is on the island, around 10 minutes by taxi from the old town.

When to go

November to March is pleasant and sunny. Summers are very hot and humid, so explore early or late in the day.
