Overview

Vanadzor is Armenia's third city, an industrial town from the Soviet era set in a green valley among wooded hills. It is not a sightseeing destination in itself, and it is honest to say so.

What makes it worth a stop is its position. It sits close to the UNESCO-listed monasteries of the Debed canyon and the forests of Dilijan, making it a practical, affordable base for northern Armenia.

Getting around

Taxis and marshrutka minibuses link Vanadzor with nearby towns. A car or hired driver is easiest for the monasteries.

Marshrutkas and taxis from Yerevan take around two to two and a half hours.

When to go

May to October is green and pleasant for hiking. Winters are cold and snowy, and some mountain roads become difficult.
