Overview

Kitwe is one of Zambia's largest cities and the hub of the Copperbelt, built around the copper mines that have powered the country's economy for a century. It is a working city rather than a tourist one, with busy markets and a passion for football.

Visitors usually come for business, but there is enough nearby for a day or two: a chimpanzee sanctuary, a fine regional museum and the Kafue River on the city's edge.

Getting around

Taxis and minibuses are the main options; hire a car with driver for trips around the Copperbelt.

Ndola's airport is under an hour from Kitwe by road, and buses connect the city with Lusaka in around five to six hours.

When to go

The cool, dry season from May to August is the most comfortable. The rains fall from November to April, and September and October are hot.
