Overview

Juba, on the west bank of the White Nile, became the capital of the world's newest country when South Sudan gained independence in 2011. It is a young, fast-growing city of low buildings, aid agency compounds and busy markets.

There are few traditional sights, and travel here is not advised at present. For a future visit, the appeal lies in the river, the markets and a glimpse of a nation still finding its feet.

Getting around

Most visitors use pre-arranged drivers. Roads beyond the main routes can be rough, especially in the rainy season.

The airport is on the north-eastern edge of the city, a short drive from most hotels.

When to go

The dry season from December to March is the easiest time, though it is very hot. Rains run roughly from April to November and make many roads difficult.
