Overview

Huye, formerly called Butare, is Rwanda's intellectual centre, home to the main campus of the national university and the country's best museum. It is a relaxed, leafy town of red-brick buildings and students on bicycles.

Few tourists linger, but it is a rewarding stop on the road between Kigali and Nyungwe Forest. Combine it with the royal palace at Nyanza and the sobering memorial at Murambi for a deeper understanding of Rwanda.

Where to stay

Getting around

The town is small and walkable, with moto-taxis for longer hops. Hire a driver for the day to visit Nyanza and Murambi, which are not easily combined by bus.

Regular buses from Kigali's Nyabugogo station take around three hours along a good, scenic road.

When to go

The dry seasons, from June to September and December to February, are best for travel and for visiting Nyungwe. The rainy months are green and quieter.
