Overview

Zinder was the capital of the Damagaram sultanate and, briefly, of the French colony of Niger. Its old quarter, the Birni, still clusters around the sultan's palace, with mud-brick houses decorated in raised geometric patterns typical of Hausa architecture.

This guide is written for a future, safer time to travel. When that comes, Zinder offers a quiet window on Hausa culture and Sahelian trade, best explored slowly with a local guide.

Getting around

Distances are short and taxis or motorbike taxis cover the town. A local guide helps in the old quarters.

Zinder is a long road journey from Niamey; the town's airport has had only occasional services.

When to go

November to February is the coolest and driest period. March to June is very hot, and the brief rains arrive from around July to September.
