Overview
Malawi's capital is a spread-out, green city of wide roads and numbered districts known as Areas. It has few big sights, and most travellers use it as a launch pad for Lake Malawi and the national parks.
Still, it is relaxed and friendly, with busy markets in Old Town and a good choice of places to eat. A day here is a gentle introduction to the country before heading for the lake.

Getting around
Distances between Areas are long, so use taxis or a driver; minibuses are cheap but crowded. Avoid walking after dark.
Kamuzu International is around 25 kilometres north of the city, about 30 to 40 minutes by taxi.
When to go
The dry season from May to October is the best time to visit, cool at first and increasingly hot towards October. The rainy season from November to April brings heavy downpours and green landscapes.
