Overview

Misrata is Libya's third city, a trading and industrial centre on the coast east of Tripoli with a large port and a reputation for business. It is not a sightseeing city in its own right.

Its appeal for a future visit lies in its position. The extraordinary Roman city of Leptis Magna is within easy reach to the west, and the coast here has long, open beaches. Keep expectations simple and treat it as a base.

Where to stay

Getting around

Taxis are the main option in the city; a trusted local driver is the sensible choice for trips to Leptis Magna.

Misrata airport is a short drive from the centre, and Tripoli is roughly three hours away by road.

When to go

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons, with warm days and cooler nights. Summers are very hot. Check the latest travel advice before making any plans.
