Overview

Liberia's capital stretches along a narrow peninsula between the Atlantic and the Mesurado River. Founded in the 1820s by freed African Americans, it carries a history unlike anywhere else in West Africa, from street names to church architecture.

It is not a polished city, but it is an engaging one, with loud markets, beach bars and a growing restaurant scene in Sinkor. Use it as a base for surf towns and rainforest further along the coast.

Getting around

Taxis and motorbike taxis are everywhere, but agree fares first and prefer a hired car with a driver, especially after dark. Traffic along Tubman Boulevard can be slow.

Roberts International is around 60 kilometres from the city, typically an hour or more by car, so arrange a pickup in advance.

When to go

The dry season from November to April is the best time to visit, with sunny skies and calmer roads. Monrovia is one of the wettest capitals in the world, and the rains from May to October are heavy and persistent.
