Overview

Maseru sits right on the Caledon River border with South Africa, a low-rise, practical capital that most travellers pass through on the way to the mountains. Lesotho is the only country in the world lying entirely above 1,000 metres, and the highlands begin within an hour of town.

Give it a day or two, though. The sandstone mountain of Thaba Bosiu, where King Moshoeshoe I founded the Basotho nation, is close by, and the city is a good place to arrange pony treks and rides into the high country.

Getting around

Minibus taxis cover the city cheaply but can be confusing at first; hiring a car or a driver makes most sense for the mountains, ideally with high clearance.

The airport lies about 20 kilometres south of the centre, roughly 30 minutes by car. Many visitors instead drive in from South Africa via the Maseru Bridge border crossing.

When to go

Autumn and spring are mild and clear, the best seasons for hiking and riding. Summer brings afternoon thunderstorms and green hills. Winters are dry and sunny but cold, with frost and occasional snow in the highlands.
