Overview

Kisumu sits on the Winam Gulf of Lake Victoria, Africa's largest lake, and is the main city of western Kenya. It is warm, laid-back and refreshingly free of crowds, with life centred on the lakeshore and its fishing beaches.

Few tourists make it here, but those who do find hippos, fresh tilapia and an easy base for the Kakamega rainforest and the islands of the lake.

Where to stay

Getting around

Tuk-tuks, boda-boda motorbike taxis and ride-hailing apps cover the city cheaply; agree fares before setting off. The lakeshore and the compact centre are pleasant on foot.

Kisumu airport is around 15 minutes from the centre, with frequent flights from Nairobi taking about an hour.

When to go

December to February and June to September are drier. Heavy rains usually fall from March to May, with shorter rains in October and November, though the climate is warm all year.
