Overview

Bafatá is a small inland town on a bend of the Geba River, about two and a half hours east of Bissau. Its hillside old quarter of Portuguese colonial buildings, some restored and many left to the weather, is one of the most picturesque in the country.

It is also the birthplace of Amílcar Cabral, who led the independence struggle. There is little to do beyond wandering and watching the river, which is exactly its appeal.

Getting around

The town is small enough to walk; motorbike taxis cover longer distances.

Shared minibuses and bush taxis run from Bissau along the main road east in about two and a half hours.

When to go

November to February is dry and comparatively cool. March to May gets very hot, and the rainy season from June to October can make side roads difficult.
