Overview

Bata is the largest city in Equatorial Guinea and the main port of the mainland region, Río Muni. Oil money has given it a long seafront promenade, wide boulevards and modern buildings beside an older, everyday town.

Visitors are rare and tourist services thin, so travel with a local contact. It's a starting point for the rainforest of Monte Alén and the quiet beaches along the Atlantic coast.

Where to stay

Getting around

Taxis are the main way to get around; arrange longer trips through your hotel.

The airport is just north of the centre, a short taxi ride away.

When to go

The drier months, roughly December to February, are the most comfortable. It's hot and humid all year, with heavy rain for much of it.
