Overview

Malmö is Sweden's third city, a young and diverse place on the Öresund strait, linked to Copenhagen by a famous bridge. Its compact old town, red-brick castle and leafy parks contrast with the striking modern architecture of the Western Harbour.

It is easy-going and very walkable, with a strong food scene. Combine it with Copenhagen or the university town of Lund, both a short train ride away.

Where to stay

Getting around

Malmö is compact and very cycle-friendly. Green city buses cover the rest, and trains link the city with Lund and Copenhagen.

Trains from Copenhagen Airport cross the bridge to Malmö Central in about 20 minutes.

When to go

Summer is the best time for beaches and outdoor terraces, and the Malmö Festival fills the city in August. Winters are mild for Sweden but windy, grey and short of daylight.
