Overview
Novi Sad is Serbia's second city, a relaxed university town on the Danube with an Austro-Hungarian centre of pastel façades and pedestrian streets. It has long been a meeting point of Serbian, Hungarian and other cultures.
Across the river, the massive Petrovaradin Fortress looks down on the town. Beyond lie the vineyards and monasteries of Fruška Gora, making Novi Sad a lovely base for a few slow days.
