Overview
Taiz lies in Yemen's green southern highlands, spread across the foot of Jabal Sabir, one of the highest mountains in the country. It was the capital of the Rasulid dynasty in the Middle Ages, and later of North Yemen's imamate.
Its whitewashed medieval mosques and the castle above the old town reflect that past. Travel to Yemen is not possible at present; this guide is for a future, safer time.

Getting around
Taxis and minibuses are the usual way to get around. When visiting becomes possible, travel with trusted local arrangements.
Taiz International lies outside the city; when visiting becomes possible, check which airports and roads are open before planning.
When to go
The highland climate is mild for most of the year. October to March is drier and pleasant, while summer brings rain that keeps the mountains green.
