Overview

Jericho is one of the oldest continuously inhabited towns on earth and among the lowest, lying well below sea level in the Jordan Valley. Springs feed a green oasis of date palms, banana groves and fruit stalls amid the surrounding desert.

This guide is written for a future, safer time. When visits resume, Jericho's ancient sites, desert monasteries and winter warmth make it a memorable stop near the Dead Sea.

Where to stay

Getting around

Taxis are the easiest way to reach the scattered sites; there is little public transport.

Jericho is close to the Allenby Bridge crossing from Jordan and has been reached by road from Jerusalem in under an hour.

When to go

November to April is warm and sunny, a welcome escape from the cooler hills. Summers are extremely hot at this altitude below sea level.
