Overview
Nizwa was Oman's capital for long periods of its history, an oasis town set among date palms at the foot of the Hajar Mountains. Its huge round fort and busy souq make it the cultural heart of the interior.
It is also the best base for the surrounding mountains, castles and mud-brick villages, so allow a few days to explore the canyons and terraced orchards nearby.
