Overview

Malé is one of the most densely populated cities in the world, a small island packed with apartment blocks, mosques, markets and scooters, a far cry from the resort postcards. Most visitors only see it from the airport, but it is worth a few hours.

It gives a real sense of Maldivian life, with its coral stone mosque, busy waterfront and lively evenings. It is a Muslim city, so dress modestly and note that alcohol is not available outside resorts.

Getting around

Malé is small enough to walk across in half an hour. Taxis are plentiful, and ferries and buses link the neighbouring islands.

The airport is on its own island next door; a ferry takes around ten minutes, or a taxi crosses the bridge in about 15.

When to go

The dry north-east monsoon from December to April brings sunny skies and calm seas. From May to November the south-west monsoon brings more rain and wind, though there are still plenty of bright days.
