Overview
Denpasar is the capital of Bali and its largest city, a busy, mostly Balinese town that many visitors only see from a taxi window. Yet it is where you will find the island's main museum, its biggest markets and a slice of everyday life away from the resorts.
It is also central: the beaches of Sanur, the surf of the Bukit peninsula and the rice terraces around Ubud are all within easy reach.

Getting around
Ride-hailing apps are the simplest option. Hiring a driver for the day is common and makes temple visits easy.
The airport is about 30 minutes by taxi from the city centre, depending on traffic.
When to go
The dry season from April to October brings sunshine and lower humidity. The wet season from November to March is hotter, with heavy showers. On Nyepi, the Balinese day of silence in March or April, the whole island shuts down.
