Overview

Dili is a small, sleepy capital strung along a bay between green mountains and some of the richest coral waters in the world. Portuguese colonial buildings, churches and a long seafront give it a laid-back feel.

Timor-Leste's recent history is painful, and the museums here tell the story of the long struggle for independence movingly. Then there's the sea: superb diving and snorkelling start right off the beaches.

Where to stay

Getting around

Taxis are plentiful; agree the fare first. Local minibuses called microlets run fixed routes.

The airport is a few kilometres west of the centre, about 15 minutes by taxi.

When to go

The dry season from May to November is best, with clear seas for diving. The wet season brings heavy rain and some roads in the hills become difficult.
